When Elie was in the hospital, and he says, “They put me in a bed with white sheets. I had forgotten that people slept in sheets," I was completely shocked. His words were so powerful, and they summed up all the life in the camps. Those words made me realize how inhumanly the prisoners were treated and what was happening to the minds of the prisoners. The prisoners were not realizing that they were treated like animals because they were so used to it. They all forgot everything about life and what it is to be treated like a living, human being. If Elie forgot about the simplest thing in life, sleeping on beds with sheets, he must’ve forgotten all sorts of things that a human has in their everyday lives. For example, Gerda Weissman had forgotten all about boys, and it meant so much for her when Kurt opened the door for her; she was treated like a human for the first time in years. Just like Gerda and Elie, all the prisoners must have forgotten all the basic needs of respect and everyday materials in life. These two sentences Elie stated when he was in the infirmary described a whole lot about the life in concentration camps.
I cannot begin to imagine being treated so poorly. To forget something as simple and unappriciated as a pair of white sheets is unfathomable to me. This quote is a picture of life in the camps. It has helped me understand that the prisioners were treated so inhumanly that they forgot that they were even people. These prisioners were being psycholigically tourmented and brainwashed. The goal of the Nazis was to dehumanize the Jews, and this shows that they were sucessful in doing so. It also makes me wonder, when Elie was released, did he face a situation similar to this? One moment he was an animal and the next a human again. How does one recover from such a traumatic experience? Such a concept will always elude me.

This quote helped me draw a more detailed image of how the Jews lived in the concentration camps. The quote describes part of what Elie has been suffering qhile he was in the concentration camp. This also describes how privileged he felt when he touched the bed with white sheets. After I finished reading the chapter I could hardly think of the way they were being treated. On the other hand I agreewith Olivia, the goal of the Nazis was being accomplished.

I would think it would be the opposite. Having him see the sheets again after many years must have made him feel like he was more at home. It is sad how cruel people can be.

As Olivia and Diana said, the sheets weren’t used in the concentration camps where people were put in overcrowded “beds”. I think it’s really sad that you forget the existence of some things after going through a horrendous experience. The prisoners got to the point where they thought they weren’t human anymore and received constant physical, emotional, and physiological torture every day. These poor prisoners were treated badly and most of them didn’t have something that they could call their own. It really surprises me that something this awful could ever happen especially in the 20th century. It must have been quite a painful experience to feel human again after being treated terribly for countless of days.
