Chapter 5 (pages 66-84): The doctors

Why are Jewish doctors working in the infirmary instead of German or Polish ones? Is this a good or bad things for the prisoners? For the doctors?

  1. The Jewish doctors are working in the infirmary because they are technically prisoners themselves. If German or Polish doctors were working in the camps, they'd have to be paid, but the Jewish doctors are forced to work, just like all the other Jews in the camp. I think this is a very positive thing for both doctors and patients because the doctors will be more kind towards their own people. If it was German doctors, they'd be much more mean to the prisoners. The Jews are lucky to have doctors of their own race, who can sympathize with them and are kind to them. It's also a good thing for the doctors because they are valuable to the guards, the SS, and the Germans in general. They are free workers and they are skilled in medicine and the camps cannot really afford to lose them. Therefore, the doctors are taken care of and are treated better than the other prisoners, and their lives are preserved much, much longer than an average camp inhabitant.

  2. First of all I think that the Germans had the Jews become the doctors themselves because there were so many of them they had to have them at work in different places. Plus the fact that Jews were to "in pure" made the Germans not want to treat the Jews. This was defiantly a good thing for the prisoners as well as for the doctors, first of all when ever a prisoners had been sent to the doctor to get treated he didn't have to work, he'd get better food, and the beds had mattresses. As well as for the doctors they got better treatment, till the end were most/almost all of the prisoners were killed.

  3. I think the Nazis made the Jewish doctors work because they didn’t have to pay for Polish or Germans doctors. The Nazis used to think that the Jewish people were like animals and weren’t worth spending money on. By using Jewish doctors, the Nazis could save money. I think this a good thing for the patients because the doctor would probably be kinder because they were in the same situation. This is also good for the doctors because they won’t be killed because they are too precious. The doctors can sympathize with the patients, give them more food, and maybe even say that the prisoners need more time in the infirmary where they are treated better. The doctors there are probably treated way better than the normal prisoners for their ability to cure people.

  4. Well I disagree with all of the post above first of all. I think the reason the germans used jewish doctors in the first place was because they found that there doctors shouldnt waste there time in the jewish people which they found lesser beings. Also the germans didnt want to waste there time in jews they felt those doctors could heal there own kind and not the jewish people. I believe that this a bad thing for the prisoners cause those jewish doctors might not be as good as the german ones. Also the german doctors have better medince and training than the jewish ones
