  2. Upon his arrival in Birkenau, Elie describes how he is separated from the female members of his family. After that he and his father are sent to the gypsy camp. Gypsies were another group targeted by the Nazis. During the war about forty percent of the European gypsies were murdered. The Nazis believed that like the Jews Gypsies were inhumane and were not a part of the ideal Aryan society many people wanted and supported.
