Chapter 5 (pages 66-84): The Infirmary

Why are patients treated so much better in the infirmary?

  1. One reason I believe they were treated better was because the Germans did not want sick Jews. They wanted workers and they needed them healthy. Or as healthy as they can get considering their conditions. Also because the docter was a jew himself. He obviously had pity for how they were treated. He was not going to his own kind that way. He wants to help them to the best of his ability. He is trying to ensure the survival of his race, of his people the best he can. He knows that they are suffering in the camps. It is like he is giving them a break from the work, from the hardships. He is giving them a sort of vacation. He does not want the to suffer if they do not have to. He will not inflict pain on Jews that are already in enough pain as it is. Why would he contribute to that if he himself is going through hardships? - christopher raygoza

  2. I agree that one of the reasons is because the doctor was a jew and wanted to save some of his people, but also I think that the Nazis were lazy. They didn't want to deal with the hassle of having to transfer the sick and almost dead prisoners. They had enough to do with the other prisoners that were like the walking dead anyways. To transfer the prisoners that were in the infirmary actually meant that the Nazis had to do something other than shoot and kill. Now, granted, they could have just made them run like the other prisoners, but that would have been pointless. They would have died on the way. Maybe the Nazis believed that they were leaving them there to die and that they'd be dead by the time the American troops or whomever got there to liberate them. However, they didn't know that they would get there in time to save them. But, as for being treated better actually IN the infirmary, I think it was because the doctor they had in there was one of the prisoners and was a Jew.

  3. There had been several reason why the infirmary had been a better place to be than any other place in the camp. The first reason why was because the doctor at the hospital was Jewish. He shurly would have respected the prisinor more than Catholic or "pure" doctor would have. The second reason why it was nice was because of the conditions The beds had mattresses and because the purpose of the infirmary was to cure people and so they were given better and healthier food. And the purpose of the camp in Ausschwitz was to have the people work to death, and while they were at the infirmary, you didn't have to work.

  4. I think that they treat the Jews much better in the infarmary because if a Jew is sick and spreads the flu all of the Jews can get sick and die. So, I think that they treat them better because they need healthy Jews to work for them. Also, I think that they were treated better so they got more strength to work when they get out of the infarmary and to replace the old people that are not that strong.

  5. In my point of view, the Germans hate Jews regardless of what condition they are on. But I’m guessing that the Germans (Nazis) hate Jews, especially when they are under severe bad conditions, now that the Nazis don’t give them food, not letting them shower, or sleep well at night. The Nazis wanted healthy workers, so that the Jews could work faster and better. Since the doctor was a Jew, it would be better for everyone. It would be better for everyone because the doctor is Jew, so maybe he would want to help other Jews escape the concentration camps. But in the other hand, if the Jews were strong and “healthy”, they could end up living at the end of the holocaust. The Jews could actually survive the holocaust. But, the Jews were not aware of when the holocaust would come to an end. So in conclusion, I would like to say that the reason that Jews were treated better in the infirmary, was because the doctor was one of them; a Jew.

  6. Patients were treated better in infirmary, because they want them to be healthy to continue working. The hospitals in the concentration camps were a place where they did experiments on you. Therefore, I believe that the infirmary is where all the Jews and people in the concentration camp can go if they feel bad. In the infirmary, the doctors did not use anaesthesia to operate on his foot and was not a good quality of medical centre but at least they took care of the Jews. Jews, were treated because they were the ones that did some of the work of the Nazis.

  7. in my opinion I believe the jews were trated much better in infirmary, because the nazzis actually cared about their health so they could keep on working, but it could also be where they tested the jews with different things and tthe tests didn't always turn out right so it could be a better place or worse in the point of view i see it from they made the jews feel slightly better than working to death outside in the concentration camps.

  8. I disagree with Daniella, Ik Joo, Chris, and the other people that said that the Jews are treated better because they needed strong workers. In my opinion, the Nazis don't really care if there are sick people, because their goal was to get rid of all Jews. As we all know, during the selection the sick and the weak were killed, so it doesn't make sense that they want to take care of the sick in the infirmary. I believe that the Jews were treated better in the infirmary because, as Michael, Payton, and others stated, the doctor himself was Jewish. Obviously, the doctor wouldn't want to see the people that he shares a religion with suffer. Another reason I think the sick were "treated better" in the infirmary is because they didn't want the Jewish to see the reality of what was happening to them. There were "hospitals" that tested the bodies without anesthesia, and with "treating them better" and giving them white sheets the Nazis thought that the Jews wouldn't really think about what was happening to them.

  9. I Will have to agree with the people saying the Jews were treated better in the infirmary because the nazis needed strong workers because they killed the weak because they would take up space and they only kept the strong. If the strong were to get sick the nazis needed them to get well soon so they can work again. The treatment in the infirmary was a walk in the park compared to the work in the outside. You were usually on bed rest and had no responsibilities. Then again the outside workers were not tested on. The patients had tests ran on them that had not neccesarilly been scientifically proven to work. I think I rather die doing work rather then being sick and ill.
