Chapter 5 (pages 66-84): Hitler kept his promises . . .

Respond to the prisoner in the infirmary who told Elie, "I have more faith in Hitler than in anyone else. He alone has kept his promises, all his promises, to the Jewish people."

  1. The words the prisoner spoke to Elie signified the loss of hope. The prisoner no longer had faith in God. Claiming he had more faith in Hitler than in anyone else, he means that he had more faith in Hitler than God. After hoping and praying to God that the Jews would be liberated, no proof of God being on their side had been witnessed. The Jews originally believed that their suffering was a test from God. However, God would have never allowed them to experience such pain and agony to the extremity in the camps if he was with them from the beginning. The prisoner eventually gave up believing in God altogether. Hitler promised to annihilate all of the Jews – a statement in which the prisoner strongly believed would happen for certain. He feels that he can count on Hitler to fulfill his promise and not on God.

  2. The prisoner gave up. He believed that there was no hope for most of the Jews like himself. He was telling the truth though, Hitler did promise some things, and he cam through. He promised power for Germany, which they got. Germany invaded and took over many countries. He blamed all of Germany's problems on the Jews and promised to get revenge. He convinced that Jews were evil and he said that he was going to get rid of them, and thats exactly what he did. He kept all of his promises, that prisoner knew it. He lost all the hope and faith that he should of had.

  3. This prisoner had been through hardship and spoke harsh words, yet , in a way, they were true at the time being. If the poor prisoner had lived longer, he would have seen the day that Jews were free, Hitler would be overpowered. One day, even though we may not understand, God probably planned to teach them something, who knows, but God always has a plan. This prisoner had simply fallen into Hitler's trap, he wanted everyone to believe Jews were terrible, and for many, it was accomplished. This prisoner had simply seen too much and decided that nobody would save them now. Hitler had promised evil like this, and he alone made it happen. The prisoner no longer knows what to believe, but has lost hope "knowing" that Hitler will prevail.

  4. To think that the only person in the world that this man has faith in is Hitler is sickening. Not only that, but it is one hundred percent true. Hitler had kept every single one of his cruel promises towards the Jews. It is as though Hitler is this man's new God. He has no doubt in Hitler's words, as he should god's. However, it is clear that faith has left this man, and he needs someone to believe. I am sure that though this prisioner strongly believes in this, he wishes otherwise. However he has no choice. God has abandoned him in this time of hardship, and he needs to believe in something that he knows will keep its promises: Hitler. Hitler is all this man has left in his dead and morbid mind... and that is tragic.

  5. When the prisoner starts to talk to Elie with does words that inspire the loose of faith, the prisoner gave up. The prisoner believes strongly that there was no hope for all Jews they all were going to die soon or later.Hitler actually promise something. He promised power for Germany and they got it.Germany took position of many countries like Poland. Hittler blame the jews for his Hallucinations with the jews been bad people. When Germany had a lost they blame it all on the poor innocent jews.

  6. The prisoner was right, Hitler did keep his promises of getting rid of the Jewish people. This alone took away a lot of faith from Elie and this cuased him to almost spite God for his denied help. This would make me angry as well so I do understand Elie's view of all of this. He was losing his faith in God becuase no one was being helped, no Jewish person at all.

  8. Why the "faceless neighbor"said that is most likely because every death-defying thing he said he would do to the Jewish people. He came through on with no ramorce he was not lying when he said he hated Jews and he wanted them all gone.because if never got caught all Jews would be dead in that Time period.
